cinemas yesterday, focusing on a new group of Southport locals being hunted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/05\/iconic-90s-horror-sequel-fans-hooked-menacing-first-look-photo-22132622\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a hook-wielding killer who is out for revenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1997 original, Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as beauty queen Helen Shivers alongside Freddie Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, but her character was brutally killed off before the end.<\/p>\n<p>Freddie and Jennifer reprised their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James for the new reboot, which was released in cinemas yesterday, but <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/10\/07\/iconic-90s-actress-confirms-wont-back-horror-sequel-21749574\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah had always maintained that she would not be following suit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a twist worthy of the big screen, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/24\/horror-fans-near-tears-spotting-subtle-tribute-iconic-90s-reboot-22961787\/\" She is truly incredible,\u2019 the actress told us. \u2018Her and Freddie, their whole family is so sweet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She doesn\u2019t come in and is like, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to give you advice. I\u2019m going to mentor you.\u201d It\u2019s just the way she moves\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She\u2019s an icon, in every sense of the word, and I have always been a huge fan of hers. I was so excited, but then so nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The first couple takes I was shaking, like, \u201cOh, my God! Holy s**t!\u201d It is so, so iconic. I remember getting on the phone with my mom and dad at the end of that day crying, \u201coh, my God, what just happened?!\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot threw the traditional horror rule book out of the window multiple times in the 1 hour, 51-minute run time.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the three main female characters survive, Freddie\u2019s character was unveiled as one of the killers \u2013 after surviving the first two movies alongside Jennifer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"365\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23614556 lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/draplenvuxio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_258326262-0580.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>The cast wanted to \u2018preserve and protect\u2019 the legacy (Picture: Sony Pictures)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Madelyn made it clear that the newcomers wanted to \u2018preserve and protect\u2019 the legacy of the original as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I don\u2019t think we\u2019re switching anything up,\u2019 she insisted. \u2018What\u2019s cool about it is that we really pay respects to the original formula that works so well.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s not like we were going by a playbook but I think we\u2019re all big fans of the first [movie] so just by that alone, we didn\u2019t want to switch it up too much. There\u2019s something about bringing something back and modernizing it in a way\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Some people have the idea of completely changing it.
