James Gunn<\/a> has opened up on the \u2018really unfair\u2019 way Henry Cavill<\/a> was fired from DC<\/a> and his role as Superman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Witcher<\/a> star first appeared as the caped superhero in 2013\u2019s Man of Steel<\/a> before starring as Superman in 2016\u2019s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He also appeared in Zack Snyder\u2019s Justice League<\/a> in 2021 and made a cameo appearance in 2022\u2019s Black Adam<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cavill announced in 2022<\/a> he would be returning to the role<\/a> in Gunn\u2019s reimagining of the franchise, only to walk back on his comments months later when he was let go by DC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Superman, released earlier this month, stars Pearl actor David Corenswet<\/a> in the titular role instead.<\/p>\n

Recalling the incident, Gunn condemned DC Studios for their handling of Cavill\u2019s role in the film.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s terrible \u2013 believe it or not, the day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios, the day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,\u2019 he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was like, \u201cWhat is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman. It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation.\u2019<\/p>\n

He went on to say the situation was \u2018really unfortunate\u2019 and he felt for the \u2018poor guy\u2019, but that Cavill took the news like an \u2018absolute gentleman.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018He said, \u201cThe only thing I ask is that I\u2019m able to reveal it myself as opposed to coming from you guys.\u201d And I\u2019m like, \u201cThat\u2019s a class act\u201d,\u2019 he continued.<\/p>\n

Gunn also said he would love to have Cavill in a future DC film, revealing he \u2018talked to him about it on that day.\u2019<\/p>\n

I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Gunn\u2019s Superman was released on July 11 and currently holds an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/superman_2025\">83% rating<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/09\/im-a-film-critic-supermans-rotten-tomatoes-score-doesnt-make-sense-23617170\/\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> with several glowing reviews.<\/p>\n<p>It sees Corenswet\u2019s Superman drawn into conflict and the public questioning his actions, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) the opportunity to rid the world of Superman for good.<\/p>\n<p>On taking on the role and being propelled from a relative unknown actor to one of the world\u2019s most recognisable superheroes, Corenswet opened up to <strong>Metro<\/strong> about
